Easi-Dec, the working at height specialist has provided York Minster Cathedral with a roof access system that allows the maintenance team to safely and securely access otherwise dangerous spaces.

York Minster is the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals, with foundations rooted in the nation's earliest history. Easi-Dec was contacted when the Cathedral required a solution that would provide safe access to the roof space of the building to upgrade the fire alarms and sensors. With the buildingÂ’s ornate architecture and design, the access system had to be easily compactible to overcome the tight spaces at the site, including the spiral staircases to the upper levels of the building. Due to these particular requirements, Easi-DecÂ’s smaller access platform, Mono-Dec was specified.

“The Mono-Dec solution has made maintenance and upgrades within the cathedral much easier,” explains Paul Greene, Building and Services Manager at York Minster cathedral. “With many of the points in hard-to-reach places, the compact solution provides a safe and reliable means of access, which ensures that our team at the cathedral are working within the safe working-at-height guidelines. And, once the project within the roof-space is complete, I have no doubt that the system will be useful all over the site.”

The Mono-Dec platform removes the need for costly and time-consuming scaffolding construction which was only required for a few minutes work at each point. Able to span windows and fixtures within the cathedral, the platform is versatile, and easily moveable throughout the premises without the need to deconstruct. With minimal parts, the erection of the unit is easy, and requires no special tools.

Due to the nature of the project, and the building still being a working facility, a key part of the specification of a platform system was that it be easy to store and set-up. Easi-DecÂ’s Mono-Dec platform allows for rapid use, and can be quickly removed, so that work is able to be carried out as and when the cathedral allows.
