Before testing is carried out, some thought should be given to creating a test plan. Ideally, a test plan should be prepared in advance with the test house concerned or with the EMC Test Engineer prior to commencing the tests. A ‘Test Plan’ should contain, or reference, the following information:

- Electrical and Mechanical details of the EUT with operating frequencies.
- Details of external cables, e.g. shielded/unshielded, purpose, utilisation, achievable lengths, etc.
- Specific EMC Standards to be used or procedures to be followed.
- List of tests, severities and durations which relate to the EUT, taking into account response times or operating modes.
- Performance Evaluation Specifications
- Special test equipment required to operate or simulate EUT performance.
- Reporting requirements for assessing performance or acceptance tests
- Method of reporting errors, measurement deviations or performance failures
- A test programme showing anticipated timescales
- Details of technical support, e.g. electrician or operative to maintain or restore functionality, spares in the event of damage, etc.

By compiling a test plan, it will streamline the testing process and therefore minimise costs.
