"Which?" Face Coverings Survey

They tested 15 different models and found that the worst allowed 93% of potentially harmful particles to escape from the wearer. Some of the face masks tested blocked more than 99% of potentially harmful bacteria from penetrating and escaping and the worst only prevented 7% of these particles from escaping.

Not surprisingly, masks with multiple layers were found to be more effective than single layer masks but there is a huge difference in quality between reusable masks sold throughout the UK. 3 out of the 15 coverings Which? tested were branded as "do not buy". If it's cheap, it's likely to be less effective.

Fabric, single layer masks cannot block ultra-fine particles such as Covid-19 unless they have been designed and tested to meet EN 14683:2019 like our Reusable Cotton Face Mask.

3Ply non-woven disposable face coverings are the most effective face coverings which provide greater protection to both the wearer and others. The best of which being the Type IIR Surgical Mask which is worn by the NHS.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) carried out site visits throughout October and found that there is general confusion over the wearing of face coverings instead of respiratory protective equipment (RPE). Face coverings are not RPE and should not be worn in a work environment to protect against airborne hazards.
