Thatching Materials
To ensure only the best thatched work is carried out, Loxley only work with the highest quality thatching materials including water reed, long straw, combed wheat straw or synthetic thatch.

Water Reed - When it comes to new build properties water reed is the material we often recommend. It has a wonderful quaint character and is the most durable of the 3.

Combed Wheat Straw - This material has been used frequently for thatching since the late 1800’s, it has a very distinctive brushed appearance making it very recognisable. With the right care combed wheat straw can last around 30-35 years.

Long Straw - With the shortest lifespan of the four materials, long straw thatching lasts around 20-25 years. Unlike the uniform appearance of combed wheat, long straw roofs have a rural aesthetic and are naturally dishevelled, this type of roofing is often used on English Farmyard Cottages.

Synthetic Thatch - We are pleased to announce we now offer an excellent alternative to natural thatch that can save you up to 50% in cost! Synthetic Thatch is a new innovation that offers all the aesthetics of traditional thatch but with minimal maintenance, added life expectance and a big saving on cost. Our artificial thatching can last a minimum of 50 years, during this time it is resistant to rot, mould and decay, it also has no risk of fading.
